![]() Pikie specialist Gary Soldati of Bigwater Lures, builds Pikies exclusively, offering them in various styles and custom colors. Today, surfcasters who subscribe to the big-bait, big-fish theory still throw Pikies, and striped bass still attack them.Įven though Creek Chub no longer makes the Pikie (with the exception of a small jointed version), several custom builders have replicated and sell this plug. In 1950, Creek Chub produced the Striper Pikie, a heavy-duty adaptation of the original lure. It didn’t take long for surfcasters to realize that super-sized versions of this metal-lip swimmer turned big striper heads, too. Like many early surfcasting plugs, this one was originally intended to catch muskies and pike. The Creek Chub Lure Company designed the Pikie in the 1920s. Not available from Creek Chub, easy to find a custom builder.Custom builders can tailor to your needs.Great swimming action and eel-like profile (jointed). So, whether you like the old-school classics or the new-school favorites, having these lures in your surf bag will up your chances at striper glory. Naturally, I had to include some newcomers, too. A proper listing of the best fishing lures ever needs a nod to that history and must give deference to the lures that “changed the game,” the lures with origin stories that are shared often among surfcasters as they wait out the slack tide, and the lures that tempted not just large, but legendary striped bass. Surfcasting for stripers is steeped in history and tradition, and filled with stories (legends even) about these fish and the anglers who chase them. That wouldn’t even begin to narrow it down. In picking this list of the best striper lures, I didn’t just look at which baits generally catch the most fish, or which have caught some of my biggest striped bass. How We Picked the Best Lures for Striped Bass But consider some factors used in the selection process. Just as there are no definitive best rock songs (with the exception of “Born to Run”), the lures here largely reflect my opinion as a devoted surfcaster and will surely be debated. ![]() The list changes based on countless variables, like time, place, atmosphere, and most of all, personal preference. Cheap, can be loaded to add weight to throw them further.Trying to narrow down hundreds of striped bass lures to the top 25 is like trying to name the 25 best rock songs of all time. Pencil poppers- Cotton Cordell is my favorite. to different weights to swim in different parts of the water column.ĭeep diving metal lip swimmers for sand beaches. Cheap can be load with water/oil/BBs etc. Very versatile, Can be used in any body of water.īucktails- match weight to the area in the water column you are targeting. Match weight of the jig head to the depth of the water or can be thrown weightless with a large hook. Soft plastics- Al gags, Z man, Sluggo all have a place in my bag, on the beach, boulder field, outlets/inlets etc. Colors Bone, Blurple or a bunker pattern are my preferred. Can be retrieved multiple different ways. Glide Baits- Alan's Custom and Scabelly are my preferred. Steady retrieve with light twitches of the rod. Blurple Or yellow over white, bone for full moon. Super Strike Zig Zag Darter- one of the best lures of all time. Blurple or yellow over white are my preferred colors. Retrieve them slowly over bolder fields at night and you have a great chance of hooking up to a larger fish IF the fish are there. They swim on the surface, have a sexy wiggle to them. I like these because they have a large profile. Plurple, olive green, dark green over white belly. After hours Sr needle and Super strike are my favorites. Large Needlefish- these will take a while to gain confidence with but they are by far my most productive lure when targeting 40" + fish. Lures I always have in my plug bag with me at night while fishing boulder fields. Sand Beaches- most lures I use in a boulder field can also be used on sand beaches but it all depends on water depth, current and structure. I fish boulder fields at night 90% of the time. ![]() It really depends what structure you'll be fishing. Though I'll bring one with me on occasion just because they're easy to squeeze in my plug bag. IMO If you're looking for larger fish at night there's much better options. Sp Minnows are great for catching schoolies. ![]()
